What are Dental Implants ?

Dental implants are an alternative solution for patients who are missing one or multiple teeth or for those who can no longer wear removable dentures. Made of titanium, the dental implant itself acts as an artificial root for your replacement tooth.

Before the treatment commences, a thorough medical history is taken to ensure suitability. A 3D scan is essential to assess bone quality/quantity and to plan for the implant placement. a computerised-aided surgical guide is now a standard practice to ensure more accurate placement of the implant.

A local anaesthetic is administered before procedure begins. The dental implant is then placed into the jaw during procedure. The jawbone then naturally fuses to the dental implant over a course of approximately three to four months, through a process called osseointegration.

Once the jawbone is completely fused, a carefully sculpted replacement tooth (an abutment) is attached on the implant to support the crown, bridge or fixed denture. Full functionality is restored creating a natural-looking tooth that won’t come loose.

Benefits & Why Choose Dental Implants

The process and consultation requires less appointments than with dentures

More value for money than bridges and dentures as bridges and dentures usually require replacement whereas an implant lasts a lifetime

A permanent tooth replacement solution that poses no risk of moving or dislodging

May look or feel more like a natural tooth

Require less maintenance than dentures, once implanted

Easily incorporates into your regular oral health routine with brushing twice a day and flossing once a day

Assist in protecting the jawbone by preventing further deterioration

Less risk of cavities developing. Since dental implants are made with titanium and affixed with a crown, bridge or fixed denture, cavities cannot occur.

Not recommended for patients with weak or unsuitable gums or jaws

Not suitable if you are a smoker

Challenges and Solutions of Dental Implant

Dark gray area around gum tissue

Solution: If the darkness is due to mild recession, then a gum graft may help although the results are unpredictable. If the darkness is due to the metal abutment, then your dentist can change it to a ceramic (Zirconia) abutment and a full ceramic crown.

Color mis-match

Solution The only solution is to remake the crown. Your dentist should first evaluate the color of your other teeth under regular or special office lighting. Then a detailed prescription must be written to the laboratory technician or master ceramist who will make the crown. This prescription can be accompanied with photos and models to help the technician in the process. Sometimes, the lab ceramist may actually come to the office and see the patient along with the dentist. This way they can better collaborate on the best color and design. The dentist should work with a very good quality laboratory who will take the time to create not just a tooth, but an art.

Gum recession

Solution Gum grafting may be helpful but is relatively unpredictable. The restorative dentist may decide to make the crown with pink porcelain to camouflage the receded gum. Results are not perfect, but can be acceptable. If the recession is due to bone loss, then considerations should be given to removal of the implant, rebuilding of the bone, and replacement with a new implant. If the recession is caused by a poorly positioned dental implant, then it should be removed and replaced at a later time. Bone and gum tissue grafting may be necessary before a new implant is placed.

Tooth size discrepancy

Solution: Before the entire treatment, the surgeon and the restorative dentist should collaborate and share all diagnostic information to design an effective treatment plan. Photos, X-rays, cone beam ct scan, and models are necessary for proper diagnosis and planning. The dentist may order a wax-up prototype of the crowns even before the implants are placed to see how they might look and fit into the space. Customized abutments should be used all the time and avoid use of prefabricated abutments. The crown must be carefully fabricated by the laboratory with proper size, form, and fit. It is with consideration of all these factors that one can expect teeth that look and feel natural.

Dental Implants vs Bridges

A dental implant is the best option for replacement of missing teeth. It is always best to try and preserve teeth with the restorative methods available. But unfortunately teeth are sometimes lost due to dental disease, cavity, fracture or cracks, or trauma, among other reasons. For many instances a dental implant is the best option to put a tooth in place of the missing tooth.

An older method to replacing missing teeth is bridges. Bridges require drilling of the surrounding teeth possibly causing damage to those teeth, but a dental implant can be placed in the missing space without any drilling or harm to the adjacent teeth. Since a dental implant can be placed directly without harming the existing teeth, it is always the better option versus a bridge. Dental implant cost is very similar to cost of a bridge making dental implants the better option. Bridges most often than not require replacement every 7-10 years, whereas a tooth implant lasts a lifetime, making dental implants less costly in the long run.

Dental Implants cost vs Dentures Cost. Of course, the dentures are less but are they suitable for you and your lifestyle. The difference between price and cost, a cheap price can cost you.
